According to the website facebookbrand. com (https://www.facebookbrand.com/), "Facebook’s mission is to make the world more open and connected. People use Facebook to stay connected with friends and family, to discover what’s going on in the world, and to share and express what matters to them."  I like that mission statement.  I think that it is important for school libraries to be available on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.  School libraries are a trusted source of information for our patrons.

This week I created a new Facebook page for the Sweetwater High School library.  I searched and found several high school libraries to use as models for my own page.

I really liked the artwork on the Thomas Downey High School Library in Modesto, CA. I took a screen shot of it to give me ideas for my own page.

The thing I liked best about the Thomas Downey HS Library page is that it has a lot of links to useful websites.
One link was to PowToons - one of my favorite ways to create presentations!  If you want to check it out, it is http://www.powtoon.com/slides/.

I also liked Oak Park and River Forest High School Library ().  My favorite things on this page were the links to the library news letters and the links to the latest ALA awards.

I also visited Cheltenham High School (https://www.facebook.com/chslibrary).  This library posted some favorite Maya Angelou quotes, and school happenings and announcements.

I noticed that there were not many comments made on the posts on any of the pages I visited, but there were several "likes".  I think that having a Facebook page is a good way to communicate with the students, parents and community.  One disadvantage that I can see is that you must post to it often to keep your audience interested.  Also, Facebook is blocked at our school, so all posting must be done outside school hours.
